What is this Program?
In an effort to expand Raleigh’s compost collection options, Toward Zero Waste facilitated a public/private partnership between Kane Realty’s Events Department and the Wake County Environmental Services Department to offer a weekly food scraps drop-off at the market. This drop-off provides community members with a free, local option to divert food waste from the landfill and has become a staple of the market.
Kane Reality’s Events Department Provides:
- A space for Toward Zero Waste volunteers to host a table at the market as needed.
- A $2 market buck for each person who contributes their food scraps to the bins.
Wake County Environmental Services Department Provides:
- The hauling fees for Compost Now to pick up the compost bins weekly.
- Free Kitchen Compost Pails to collect food scraps.
Toward Zero Waste Provides:
- Frequent tabling to engage market goers interested in composting
- Special events like Smash Don’t Trash pumpkin composting
