She specializes in mindfulness and body-based approaches to healing trauma\, attachment\, and relationship difficulties. A returned Peace Corps Volunteer who speaks four languages\, Miriam brings a global perspective to her clinical work. She loves helping people work with their emotions about climate change and other global crises and sees this inner work as an important part of changing the world. Miriam earned a BA from Columbia University in 1999 and a Masters of Social Work from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2007. DESCRIPTION:LWV-Wake’s Environment Committee\, in collaboration with Toward Zero Waste\, will host the November Timely Topics event\, a discussion of the problem of plastic pollution in North Carolina and recent efforts to combat this problem. \nOne of those efforts is HB-28\, the NC Managing Environmental Waste Act of 2023. Championed by Rep. Harry Warren (R\, Rowan)\, the bill’s primary sponsor\, and Rep. Pricey Harrison (D-Guilford)\, HB 28 is a bipartisan bill that allocates funds to the NC Policy Collaboratory to study the issue of food service ware and that aims to reduce the use of single-use plastic throughout the state. \nLeading the discussion will be Grady O’Brien\, Policy Associate with the North Carolina Conservation Network and Leigh Williams\, Co-Founder of Toward Zero Waste. Mr. O’Brien will summarize the current status of the bill and will outline the challenges faced by legislators and environmentalists who are working to eliminate plastic waste. Ms. Williams will describe her journey towards zero waste and provide tips for how we all can reduce the solid waste we create in our homes. \nThe Environment Committee will be offering light refreshments for attendees.  In a spirit of sustainability\, all serve ware will be either reusable or compostable. \nThis will be an in-person event and is open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Join us and other volunteers for Raleigh City Farm’s weekly Wine + Weeds social weeding party that stewards the gardens on the Farm. Meet us in front of the red farmer shed at 6pm\, then raise a compostable cup (or BYO glass) of wine (provided by Raleigh City Farm and sourced from their neighbor\, Wine Authorities) before a fun\, relaxed hour or more of weeding. Make sure to stop by a little early to check out the Farm’s Pay-What-You-Can Farmstand. Visitors have the opportunity to find out how to start their own herb garden while touring the Anne B. Kratzer Educational Garden\, including a close-up look at the historic 1850s Page smokehouse. \nIn addition to touring the garden\, festival-goers can stroll through booths selling a wide variety of garden-related items\, including home care products\, soaps and lotions\, edible treats\, garden products\, and crafts. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free tour of Sonoco Recycling’s materials recovery facility (MRF) in Raleigh\, on April 21st at 1pm. This will be a fantastic opportunity to learn about the what happens after you throw things in the recycling bin including how material is sorted and bundled. Recycling is one of the Rs of zero waste and it is important to recycle right. \nTo sign up the Sonoco Recycling Tour Raleigh: https://bit.ly/3Z3dXiV There is a cap of 20 people\, so please be sure you can attend if you sign up!
