SUMMARY:Cary/Apex\, NC Impact Meeting w/ guest Regina Smardon
DESCRIPTION:Clean drinking water is one of life’s key necessities. Join TZW Cary & Apex to hear from Regina Smardon about her research on water contaminants and how under-sink filters are temporary but more sustainable than bottled water.\nAfterward\, we will share ongoing impact initiatives and discuss what you want to see happen. If you are interested in volunteering with TZW\, this is a good meeting to attend. If you have any questions\, please contact Andrea Rushing\, TZW Cary/Apex Community Director\, at andrea@towardzerowaste.org. \nRegister HERE. \nAbout Dr. Regina Smardon\nDr. Regina Smardon\, of Holly Springs\, is a sociology PhD who teaches statistics and sociology by day and studies data analytics by night. She is also a single mother to a lovely tweenage daughter who inspired her to get involved with environmental sustainability. All of Regina’s environmental and sustainability work has been a 100% volunteer effort. She has served on the board of directors for Sustainable Sandhills\, in Fayetteville\, NC for 4 years—3 as the Vice Chair of the Board. Regina then joined the Board of Directors of the Cape Fear River Assembly\, as the mid-basin representative\, for 3 years. While on the executive board for CFRA Regina served on committees that planned the annual CFRA conference (inviting speakers like Dr. Jamie Dewitt of ECU and Dr. Detlef Knappe at NCSU to talk about research on the Cape Fear River basin). She also served on the committees planning community forums on Drinking Water Quality and Climate Resilience Planning up and down the Cape Fear River. Regina started the SWWWAG (SouthWest Wake Water Advocacy Group—focused primarily on Holly Springs and Fuquay Varina) FB group in February 2020 to connect local communities to issues affecting the whole water basin. In 2021 Regina added the title of breast cancer survivor to her list of accomplishments and this has increased her passion for environmental health issues (especially hormone disruptors). Dr. Smardon is currently grant writing with Dr. Jamie Dewitt from ECU and Beth Markesino\, Executive Director\, of Stop GenX in Our Water to study the distribution of under-sink drinking water filters in New Hanover County (Wilmington Area).

SUMMARY:Canning With Cooperative Extension - Strawberries
DESCRIPTION:The Guilford County Cooperative Extension Center has invited us to join them virtually as they go over the basics of canning strawberries. Here is more about the class from the center: Canning is a safe\, economical way to preserve quality food at home. Canning interrupts the normal spoiling and decaying cycle of food. This is done by heating the food contained in a home canning jar and closing it with a two piece vacuum sealing cap. Canning homegrown foods can save you half the cost of buying commercially canned food. Canning your favorite and special products to be enjoyed by family and friends is a fulfilling experience and a source of pride for many people. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/137989342839  **A Zoom link will be sent out the day of the event** \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Teens Talk: How to Talk About the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Please join Toward Zero Waste’s first Teens Talk where our panelists will share ideas for ways to talk to people about the environment and the impacts of climate change. Our panelists will be a variety of young adults from Triangle-area environmental clubs as well as environmental activists. \nThis event is targeted to middle and high school students who are interested in learning more about the importance of talking about environmental issues as well as the best strategies for having healthy\, productive conversations. \nPlease register via Zoom for this free event. \nCheck out our Teens Talk Resource page for links and videos on how to talk with family\, friends and others about environmental issues.  \nOrganizer & Moderator\nShriya Nanugonda\nHey! My name is Shriya Nanugonda and I am a Junior at Raleigh Charter High School. I am an avid binge watcher and play sports such as soccer and track. I first started working with Toward Zero Waste as part of my gold award for Girl Scouts. I created a page where kids can learn about zero waste and the environmental problems we all face. After all my research and meetings\, I realized communication is an important part of environmental advocacy and decided to help create these seminars. \nPanelists\nLogan Mossbarger\nI‘m a Zero Waste Wolfpack Intern with the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling at North Carolina State University. In this position\, I have worked on a number of initiatives throughout the campus to both educate students and change the waste management infrastructure on NC State’s campus. I perform waste audits\, work with our social media\, and perform a number of other tasks all centered around our waste management system. On top of that\, I am a senior studying a dual degree in Sustainable Material & Technology and Environmental Technology & Management. Kind of a long dual degree name but to put it simply I’m studying all aspects of sustainability and how that relates to environmental quality/protection. Connect with us @NCStateRecycles on Facebook\, Instagram\, Twitter\, & TikTok! \nSami Bommu\nHi! My name is Sami Bommu and I’m a Junior at Panther Creek High School. I enjoy exploring the environment and its effects on the human body. I was part of the volunteer program at UNC REX where I helped in the Childcare Development Center. I have been a part of Cary Teen Council for five years and I am currently the representative for the Environmental Advisory Board. For the past two years\, I have been researching the effects of nutritional deficiencies on pregnant women in developing countries. This has allowed me to understand the environmental burdens that affect low-income and high-income neighborhoods disproportionately. I hope to double major in Environmental Health and Computer Science in college. \nAida Guo\nAida Guo is a junior and the President of Environmental club at Green Level High School. Her interest in the environment and climate change began with reading a New York Times article describing how Shanghai (where her much of her family lives) would be underwater by 2050. Now she is passionate about fighting environmental racism and for climate justice. \nPrerana Prabhushankar\nPrerana Prabhushankar is a current Senior at Enloe High School in Raleigh. She has been with Alliance for Climate Education since her junior year\, and she has also been involved with NC Warn and Earth Uprising Chapel Hill. Two of her favorite memories are writing 400 post cards to unregistered voters to encourage them to vote for a climate friendly planet through the ENOUGH! Campaign and hosting a climate justice webinar with NC Warn. \nQuestions?\nUse the form below and our organizers will be in touch. \n  \nEmail *Question about the event?Question for a panelist? \n \n \n \n \n \n Thank you for your message. SUMMARY:Ask The Expert\, Recycling Q&A (Mecklenburg County\, NC)
DESCRIPTION:Toward Zero Waste ~ Charlotte is teaming up with Mecklenburg County Solid Waste to ensure our recycling efforts are not in vain! As we work to reduce landfill contributions\, recycling plays an important role. But wishful recycling could cause even more waste! \nTo get the most out of our Q&A session we invite you to watch this 40-minute video at least once over the next three weeks (http://bit.ly/RecycleRight2021) It covers many of the most frequently asked recycling questions. The video is presented by Mecklenburg County Residential Recycling Educators\, Maitri Meyer & Walker Spruill. They have been sustainability enthusiasts for years and both have a strong passion to educate others on reduced consumption and proper recycling. They will also be joining us for the Ask The Experts Recycling Q & A. \nHere is the video outline: \n\nAn overview of the residential curbside recycling process in Mecklenburg county\nChallenges & costs of wishful recycling and how residents can help\nWhat is and is not recyclable\nInteractive/fun game to solidify learning and clarify common misinformation.\n\nAfter watching the video you’ll probably still have some recycling-related questions. That’s great! Please send all of those questions ahead of time to: rachel@towardzerowaste.org. On April 17th at 10 AM EST\, we will be hosting a live Ask the Experts Recycling Q&A where we will be answering all of the questions that you sent in.

SUMMARY:Plant Based Diet Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to move toward a plant-based diet!\nAbout this Event\nProject Drawdown states that switching to a plant-based diet is one of the best things we can all do to reduce our impact on the environment. However\, sometimes it can feel like a daunting task to change your whole diet. Questions like\, “where do I get protein?” are common and can feel hard to overcome. We are hosting an Ask Me Anything session with Maddie Segal from the Plant Based Foods Association. She is here to (non-judgmentally) answer any of your burning questions about some small steps you can take right away on your journey towards this delicious\, healthful\, and sustainable way of eating. A Zoom link will be sent out a few hours before the event. \nRegister for Free\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/plant-based-diet-qa-tickets-133996813075?fbclid=IwAR35XKCEEcwnBlwMeqeida1ldhGssHwH3SOh9KmbzITNJcXiOjQecjWhYaw\n\n \n*Opinions represented in this presentation reflect the personal opinions of Maddie Segal\, not the opinion of the Plant Based Foods Association.
