SUMMARY:Raleigh Area- Toward Zero Emissions
DESCRIPTION:Want a chance to win a prize* and reduce your emissions at the same time? Instead of hopping in your car by yourself\, how many times can you use the FREE city bus\, scooter\, bike\, walk\, use your EV or carpool? Each of these activities will lower emissions\, reduce traffic\, help show demand for a non-car centric infrastructure\, and encourage others to do the same. Get an entry into a prize drawing each time you post or email. \nRegister to set your goal HERE!  Use hashtag #tzemissions. You can post to Facebook\, Twitter\, Instagram or email to raleigh@towardzerowaste.org \nIn conjunction with the City of Raleigh’s Climate Action Pledge and Walktober celebration (https://raleighnc.gov/news/2021-08-31-october-walktober) Toward Zero Waste Raleigh is challenging you to use alternate transportation as much as possible during the month of October. \nPrizes:\n3 Bolt Scooter Passes with the value of $30 each\n3 Citrix Bike Day Passes\n5 Spin  $20 promo passes \n*Challenge Rules\nA person is entered into the drawing each time they post a picture of themselves on our social media using the hashtag #tzemissions or email the picture to Raleigh@towardzerowaste.org showing themselves working toward zero emissions by using another form of transportation that the challenge has highlighted (bus\, scooter\, bike\, or walk). Toward Zero Waste will also accept entries of people with their electric vehicles or carpooling. The last day to post or send in an entry will be 11:59pm on October 31st\, 2021. A person needs to be 18 years-old to enter the challenge. A person is eligible to only win one prize.  11 winners will be chosen from all the entries so the more you enter the greater chance you have to win. The winners will be notified by November 12th.\nWeek 1- Bus\nDid you know that Raleigh city buses (and all the buses in the Go Triangle system) are free through June 2022?  And that they are always free for kids 12 and under\, teens 13-18 with a Youth Pass\, and seniors 65+. \nWhy not take one for a spin this month? \nRaleigh Community Director\, Dawn Comfort\, shares how she uses the bus- \nI use a combination of Google Maps and the TransLoc app (https://transloc.com/app/) to figure out my bus rides. \nIn Google Maps\, simply plug in your destination like normal\, ask for your directions from your current location\, but then select bus as your mode of transportation. (BusWeek/Maps1.jpg) \nYou get a selection of different buses available to you complete with walk times to and from the bus stops (but ignore the cost because it’s free!)  (BusWeek/Maps2.jpg) \nYou can also select your departure time or when you need to arrive to better plan your trip. (BusWeek/Maps3.jpg) \nOnce I have your plan or I’m out and about\, I pull up TransLoc.  TransLoc shows the routes and stops in your area.  It also shows the real time location of the buses.  (BusWeek/TransLoc.jpg) Now sometimes this realtime is working better than others\, but it’s super useful when it’s working correctly. \nWeek 2- Scooter\nSeveral years ago\, Lime scooters burst onto the Raleigh scene. I looked at them very askance with everyone zipping in and out of traffic\, going up on sidewalks and just leaving them everywhere. I felt sure it was only a matter of time before someone was seriously injured or killed.  Obviously others agreed because they disappeared as rapidly as they appeared. Well\, they’re back! \nHowever\, in the intervening years\, Raleigh has made huge strides in its bike infrastructure. There’s the north-south connector\, a cycle track on Harrington (south-bound) and West (north-bound). There are protected bike lanes along Morgan\, Blount and Person just to name a few. This time\, I’ve embraced the scooter presence. The bike lanes work great for scooters and work to keep us safe from cars and pedestrians safe from us! Even if you have to drive your car to get downtown\, you can now park it for the day or evening and still easily get to all the many different parts of town you want to visit. \nCome to scooter school as part of Raleigh’s Walktober celebration on 10/9 11am-2pm at Moore Square and take a test scoot. \nWeek 3- Bike\nLast week\, we talked about the new bike lanes in downtown Raleigh for scootering\, but\, of course\, a primary use of these lanes is for cycling! \nFor people without cars\, biking is a major form of transportation. As Nick Neptune\, chair of Oaks and Spokes\, said during Raleigh’s Go Green symposium\, bike lanes are not merely a safety issue or an environmental issue\, they are an equity issue. \nAs someone who has spent a fair amount time biking around Raleigh\, I know that the rolling hills that make our city so pretty can be daunting on a bike and make for sweaty work during our humid summer months. Enter Citrix Cycle e-bikes. \nA Citrix Cycle day pass at $6/day has to be one of the best bargains going for both transportation and entertainment.\nDownload the Citrix Cycle app and you will get a map of bike docking stations. There are around 25 stations scattered throughout downtown and the NC State corridor. Unlocking a bike in similar to unlocking a scooter – simply scan the bar code or enter the bike id number in the app and away you go. \nPro tip: Be sure to look for the lightning bolt on the back fender if you want e-assist. Some bikes are regular geared bikes.\nYou will need to dock your bike every 45 minutes\, but a day pass gives you unlimited unlocking for the day. \nWeek 4- Walk\n \nFor the fourth and final week of the Toward Zero Emissions challenge\, it seems appropriate to highlight the oldest\, most basic form of transportation – walking.  \nIf we’re lucky\, walking isn’t something we think much about.  If we’re not so lucky\, we have to think a lot about accessibility\, obstacles\, and safety.  One thing this challenge has made me more aware of is infrastructure\, particularly sidewalks.  New Bern Avenue\, location of the first upcoming BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) corridor\, was picked to be first because of it’s high bus ridership.  It has NO sidewalks once you get east of Poole Road.  I saw people walking to their bus stop in knee high grass having to navigate a culvert right by 4 lanes of traffic.\nI’m happy to see that the Complete Streets model has been adopted by our metro area to work towards equitable and safe transportation for all.\nFor more information on initiatives\, big and small\, check out the different BRT plans of which first mile/last mile solutions play an integral part: https://raleighnc.gov/bus-rapid-transit\nAND the different bike/pedestrian projects coming soon to a neighborhood near you?\nhttps://raleighnc.gov/projects?type=411&funding=All&name= \n\nOnce you’ve looked your fill online\, get out and enjoy this beautiful fall weather.  Raleigh’s WalktoberFest is winding down\, but they have some special Halloween events still to come (Family Scarecrow Walk!  Walking Tour of Oakwood Cemetery!)  There are also some self-guided walking tours you can do whenever they fit into your schedule.  I particularly recommend the Downtown Murals Tour

From 2011-2019 he oversaw a team of 50 employees and three stores that bought and sold about 250\,000 clothing items per year. He saw first hand the transition away from brands emphasizing classic style and quality and towards fast fashion brands like Forever 21 and H&M. He became aware of the astounding amount of discarded clothing in our communities and learned the vast majority of clothing will end up in a landfill or baled up and sold by weight overseas. He is encouraged to find these materials increasingly being repurposed into things like insulation and hopeful that greater awareness can reduce the excessive waste. Susan Kask\, PhD.Chief Sustainability & Strategy Officer\, Himalayan Wild FibersUnderstanding business and consumer choices involving the environment has been the focus of Susan Kask’s 35+ year career as a professor and consultant. Dr. Kask’s expertise in valuing non-market environmental goods evolved into a specialty in sustainability metrics development. She has published numerous articles and book chapters. These projects provide the foundation for her current work with business bringing sustainability values and metrics directly into business choices.\nOver the course of her career Dr. Kask has held positions as an Energy Economics Research Fellow in New Zealand\, Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Asheville\, Associate Professor in the Business School at Western Carolina University and Full Professor at Warren Wilson College. She is currently a consultant and the founder of Values2Action LLC and Chief Sustainability and Strategy officer at Himalayan Wild Fibers LLC\, a textile fiber company.Eric HenryPresident\, TS Designs Eric Henry’s journey into sustainability started January 1\, 1994\, the day NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) was enacted and he saw the business he started in the late 70’s completely destroyed. He realized then there is more to a business than a bottom line and changed to run TS Designs based on a triple bottom line of people – planet – profit. The vision of TS Designs is to make the highest quality printed apparel in a domestic transparent and trackable supply chain. TS Designs became the first certified B Corp in North Carolina. \nCurrent president of TS Designs\, Eric got his start when he launched Creative Screen Designs in 1978 while attending North Carolina State University. Two years later\, he and Tom Sineath merged companies to incorporate TS Designs.Karen Leonas\, PhD.Professor\, Fashion & Textile ManagementDr. Karen K. Leonas\, Professor of Textile Sciences\, in the Department of Textile and Apparel\, Technology and Management. She is a member of the graduate faculty in Textile Technology Management\, Fiber and Polymer Sciences\, and Textile Chemistry. Dr. Leonas teaches a variety of classes including an introductory class\, The Textile Industry\, and graduate courses in Sustainability and Textile Technology Management. She has received numerous award for outstanding teaching and advising. \nHer research has spanned several areas and she is well known for product development\, medical textiles\, and reducing/evaluating the environmental impacts of textile and apparel production and consumption. Her strengths in chemistry and polymer engineering\, combined with understanding the development\, production\, distribution and consumption allows for insights to address sustainability through the textile and apparel supply chain. Several years ago\, she chose to focus her research on this complex and critical area. Specifically she has investigated polymer degradation in various environments (marine\, freshwater\, agricultural\, body fluids)\, microfiber release and transmission\, new product development using recycled and bio materials materials (recycled PET\, Nylon\, PLA\, Cotton\, etc.)\, processing technologies to reduce environmental impact\, and water scarcity/footprint to name a few. She is a strong advocate for a circular economy (closed loop manufacturing) business model. Dr. Leonas has received numerous awards and recognitions for her research. \nDr. Leonas frequently partners with industry and is on the New York Academy of Sciences Change Fashion Advisory Board\, Walmart Technical Collaboration Board\, Walmart Sustainability Collaboration Board\, AATCC Sustainability Committee\, The Sustainability Consortium – Co-Chair\, Clothing\, Footwear and Textile Committee\, are several of her memberships. In addition\, she is active in the University and Community efforts promoting sustainable practices. \nDr. Leonas received her BS in Textile Chemistry from NC State\, her MS in Clothing and Textiles from University of Tennessee\, Knoxville\, and her PhD in Textile Chemistry/Textile Physics with and emphasis in Polymer Engineering as part of the PATRA (Polymer and Textile Research Association) from the University for Tennessee\, Knoxville. She worked for Burlington Industries\, Industrial Fabrics Division and has been on the Faculty at the University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urbana\, University of Georgia\, and Washington State University prior to being asked to join the Wilson College of Textiles faculty. She has served in various administrative roles including Graduate Programs Coordinator and Department Head at several of these Universities.

SUMMARY:Teens Talk: How to Advocate for the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Please join Toward Zero Waste’s second Teens Talk where our panelists will share ideas for ways to talk to advocate for the environment. Our panelists will include a variety of young adults from Triangle-area environmental advocacy groups. \n\n\nThis event is targeted to middle and high school students who are interested in learning more about the importance of advocating for changes within their community to protect the environment. \n\n\nPlease register via Zoom for this free event. You can submit questions for the panelists in advance using the form below. \nCheck out our Teens Talk Resource for additional information. \n\nOrganizer & Moderator\nShriya Nanugonda\nHey! My name is Shriya Nanugonda and I am a Junior at Raleigh Charter High School. I am an avid binge watcher and play sports such as soccer and track. I first started working with Toward Zero Waste as part of my gold award for Girl Scouts. I created a page where kids can learn about zero waste and the environmental problems we all face. After all my research and meetings\, I realized communication is an important part of environmental advocacy and decided to help create these seminars. \nPanelists\nNick Trombetta\n I am an activist and graduate of UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in environmental studies. My passion for politics and social justice was awoken by my experience with the Bernie Sanders campaign in 2020. For the first time I felt like I was a part of something special that was going to change the world for the better. While Bernie did not win\, I did not let go of that feeling. I have since become active with the Sunrise Movement\, Cary Green Citizens Coalition\, and the Progressive International. I have educated myself by reading many books from radical and left leaning authors such as Noam Chomsky\, Walter Rodney\, Naomi Klein\, Michael Parenti\, Howard Zinn\, and Angela Davis. \nSydney Tai\nHi! I’m Sydney Tai and I’m a rising senior at Cary Academy. I’m passionate about driving individual environmental action by making sustainability less daunting and more fun\, a goal I worked towards when co-leading my school’s environmental club for the past two years. Next year\, I am excited to serve as Cary Academy’s inaugural Chief Environmental & Sustainability Officer\, a role which will unify all environmental initiatives on campus. In addition to hugging trees\, I also enjoy playing tennis competitively\, doing Speech and Debate\, and coaching at Cary Tennis Park. \nRocco Nociti\nHey\, my name is Rocco Nociti and I’m a rising Junior at Purdue University studying Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Architectural Engineering and a minor in Sustainable Engineering. I’ve always been fascinated by nature and the idea of a self-sustaining lifestyle and have done my best to advocate for renewable energy education and implement environmentally-safe practices. In high school I was the heavily involved in Student Council as the Student Body President and the STEM Energy & Sustainability Academy as an ambassador where I founded the Athens Drive Solar Panel Initiative as well as other smaller projects throughout my high school years. Outside of school and extracurriculars\, you’ll almost always either find me in the gym\, the kitchen\, or hanging out with friends. \nQuestions about the event?\nQuestion you would like to ask the panelists?\nUse the form below and our organizers will be in touch. \nEmail *Question about the event?Question for a panelist? \n \n \n \n \n \n Thank you for your message. SUMMARY:Cary/Apex\, NC Impact Meeting w/ guest Regina Smardon
DESCRIPTION:Clean drinking water is one of life’s key necessities. Join TZW Cary & Apex to hear from Regina Smardon about her research on water contaminants and how under-sink filters are temporary but more sustainable than bottled water.\nAfterward\, we will share ongoing impact initiatives and discuss what you want to see happen. If you are interested in volunteering with TZW\, this is a good meeting to attend. If you have any questions\, please contact Andrea Rushing\, TZW Cary/Apex Community Director\, at andrea@towardzerowaste.org. \nRegister HERE. \nAbout Dr. Regina Smardon\nDr. Regina Smardon\, of Holly Springs\, is a sociology PhD who teaches statistics and sociology by day and studies data analytics by night. She is also a single mother to a lovely tweenage daughter who inspired her to get involved with environmental sustainability. All of Regina’s environmental and sustainability work has been a 100% volunteer effort. She has served on the board of directors for Sustainable Sandhills\, in Fayetteville\, NC for 4 years—3 as the Vice Chair of the Board. Regina then joined the Board of Directors of the Cape Fear River Assembly\, as the mid-basin representative\, for 3 years. While on the executive board for CFRA Regina served on committees that planned the annual CFRA conference (inviting speakers like Dr. Jamie Dewitt of ECU and Dr. Detlef Knappe at NCSU to talk about research on the Cape Fear River basin). She also served on the committees planning community forums on Drinking Water Quality and Climate Resilience Planning up and down the Cape Fear River. Regina started the SWWWAG (SouthWest Wake Water Advocacy Group—focused primarily on Holly Springs and Fuquay Varina) FB group in February 2020 to connect local communities to issues affecting the whole water basin. In 2021 Regina added the title of breast cancer survivor to her list of accomplishments and this has increased her passion for environmental health issues (especially hormone disruptors). Dr. Smardon is currently grant writing with Dr. Jamie Dewitt from ECU and Beth Markesino\, Executive Director\, of Stop GenX in Our Water to study the distribution of under-sink drinking water filters in New Hanover County (Wilmington Area).

SUMMARY:Canning With Cooperative Extension - Strawberries
DESCRIPTION:The Guilford County Cooperative Extension Center has invited us to join them virtually as they go over the basics of canning strawberries. Here is more about the class from the center: Canning is a safe\, economical way to preserve quality food at home. Canning interrupts the normal spoiling and decaying cycle of food. This is done by heating the food contained in a home canning jar and closing it with a two piece vacuum sealing cap. Canning homegrown foods can save you half the cost of buying commercially canned food. Canning your favorite and special products to be enjoyed by family and friends is a fulfilling experience and a source of pride for many people. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/137989342839  **A Zoom link will be sent out the day of the event** \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Teens Talk: How to Talk About the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Please join Toward Zero Waste’s first Teens Talk where our panelists will share ideas for ways to talk to people about the environment and the impacts of climate change. Our panelists will be a variety of young adults from Triangle-area environmental clubs as well as environmental activists. \nThis event is targeted to middle and high school students who are interested in learning more about the importance of talking about environmental issues as well as the best strategies for having healthy\, productive conversations. \nPlease register via Zoom for this free event. \nCheck out our Teens Talk Resource page for links and videos on how to talk with family\, friends and others about environmental issues.  \nOrganizer & Moderator\nShriya Nanugonda\nHey! \nPanelists\nLogan Mossbarger\nI‘m a Zero Waste Wolfpack Intern with the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling at North Carolina State University. In this position\, I have worked on a number of initiatives throughout the campus to both educate students and change the waste management infrastructure on NC State’s campus. I perform waste audits\, work with our social media\, and perform a number of other tasks all centered around our waste management system. On top of that\, I am a senior studying a dual degree in Sustainable Material & Technology and Environmental Technology & Management. Kind of a long dual degree name but to put it simply I’m studying all aspects of sustainability and how that relates to environmental quality/protection. Connect with us @NCStateRecycles on Facebook\, Instagram\, Twitter\, & TikTok! \nSami Bommu\nHi! My name is Sami Bommu and I’m a Junior at Panther Creek High School. I enjoy exploring the environment and its effects on the human body. I was part of the volunteer program at UNC REX where I helped in the Childcare Development Center. I have been a part of Cary Teen Council for five years and I am currently the representative for the Environmental Advisory Board. For the past two years\, I have been researching the effects of nutritional deficiencies on pregnant women in developing countries. This has allowed me to understand the environmental burdens that affect low-income and high-income neighborhoods disproportionately. I hope to double major in Environmental Health and Computer Science in college. \nAida Guo\nAida Guo is a junior and the President of Environmental club at Green Level High School. Her interest in the environment and climate change began with reading a New York Times article describing how Shanghai (where her much of her family lives) would be underwater by 2050. Now she is passionate about fighting environmental racism and for climate justice. \nPrerana Prabhushankar\nPrerana Prabhushankar is a current Senior at Enloe High School in Raleigh. She has been with Alliance for Climate Education since her junior year\, and she has also been involved with NC Warn and Earth Uprising Chapel Hill. Two of her favorite memories are writing 400 post cards to unregistered voters to encourage them to vote for a climate friendly planet through the ENOUGH! Campaign and hosting a climate justice webinar with NC Warn. \nQuestions?\nUse the form below and our organizers will be in touch. \n  \nEmail *Question about the event?Question for a panelist? \n \n \n \n \n \n Thank you for your message. SUMMARY:Ask The Expert\, Recycling Q&A (Mecklenburg County\, NC)
DESCRIPTION:Toward Zero Waste ~ Charlotte is teaming up with Mecklenburg County Solid Waste to ensure our recycling efforts are not in vain! As we work to reduce landfill contributions\, recycling plays an important role. But wishful recycling could cause even more waste! \nTo get the most out of our Q&A session we invite you to watch this 40-minute video at least once over the next three weeks (http://bit.ly/RecycleRight2021) It covers many of the most frequently asked recycling questions. They have been sustainability enthusiasts for years and both have a strong passion to educate others on reduced consumption and proper recycling. They will also be joining us for the Ask The Experts Recycling Q & A. \nHere is the video outline: \n\nAn overview of the residential curbside recycling process in Mecklenburg county\nChallenges & costs of wishful recycling and how residents can help\nWhat is and is not recyclable\nInteractive/fun game to solidify learning and clarify common misinformation.\n\nAfter watching the video you’ll probably still have some recycling-related questions. That’s great! Please send all of those questions ahead of time to: rachel@towardzerowaste.org.
