SUMMARY:Teens Talk: How to Advocate for the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Please join Toward Zero Waste’s second Teens Talk where our panelists will share ideas for ways to talk to advocate for the environment. Our panelists will include a variety of young adults from Triangle-area environmental advocacy groups. \n\n\nThis event is targeted to middle and high school students who are interested in learning more about the importance of advocating for changes within their community to protect the environment. \n\n\nPlease register via Zoom for this free event. You can submit questions for the panelists in advance using the form below. \nCheck out our Teens Talk Resource for additional information. \n\nOrganizer & Moderator\nShriya Nanugonda\nHey! My name is Shriya Nanugonda and I am a Junior at Raleigh Charter High School. I am an avid binge watcher and play sports such as soccer and track. I first started working with Toward Zero Waste as part of my gold award for Girl Scouts. I created a page where kids can learn about zero waste and the environmental problems we all face. After all my research and meetings\, I realized communication is an important part of environmental advocacy and decided to help create these seminars. \nPanelists\nNick Trombetta\n I am an activist and graduate of UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in environmental studies. My passion for politics and social justice was awoken by my experience with the Bernie Sanders campaign in 2020. For the first time I felt like I was a part of something special that was going to change the world for the better. While Bernie did not win\, I did not let go of that feeling. I have since become active with the Sunrise Movement\, Cary Green Citizens Coalition\, and the Progressive International. I have educated myself by reading many books from radical and left leaning authors such as Noam Chomsky\, Walter Rodney\, Naomi Klein\, Michael Parenti\, Howard Zinn\, and Angela Davis. \nSydney Tai\nHi! I’m Sydney Tai and I’m a rising senior at Cary Academy. I’m passionate about driving individual environmental action by making sustainability less daunting and more fun\, a goal I worked towards when co-leading my school’s environmental club for the past two years. Next year\, I am excited to serve as Cary Academy’s inaugural Chief Environmental & Sustainability Officer\, a role which will unify all environmental initiatives on campus. In addition to hugging trees\, I also enjoy playing tennis competitively\, doing Speech and Debate\, and coaching at Cary Tennis Park. \nRocco Nociti\nHey\, my name is Rocco Nociti and I’m a rising Junior at Purdue University studying Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Architectural Engineering and a minor in Sustainable Engineering. I’ve always been fascinated by nature and the idea of a self-sustaining lifestyle and have done my best to advocate for renewable energy education and implement environmentally-safe practices. In high school I was the heavily involved in Student Council as the Student Body President and the STEM Energy & Sustainability Academy as an ambassador where I founded the Athens Drive Solar Panel Initiative as well as other smaller projects throughout my high school years. Outside of school and extracurriculars\, you’ll almost always either find me in the gym\, the kitchen\, or hanging out with friends. \nQuestions about the event?\nQuestion you would like to ask the panelists?\nUse the form below and our organizers will be in touch. \nEmail *Question about the event?Question for a panelist? \n \n \n \n \n \n Thank you for your message. SUMMARY:Canning With Cooperative Extension - Strawberries
DESCRIPTION:The Guilford County Cooperative Extension Center has invited us to join them virtually as they go over the basics of canning strawberries. Here is more about the class from the center: Canning is a safe\, economical way to preserve quality food at home. Canning interrupts the normal spoiling and decaying cycle of food. This is done by heating the food contained in a home canning jar and closing it with a two piece vacuum sealing cap. Canning homegrown foods can save you half the cost of buying commercially canned food. Canning your favorite and special products to be enjoyed by family and friends is a fulfilling experience and a source of pride for many people. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/137989342839  **A Zoom link will be sent out the day of the event** \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Teens Talk: How to Talk About the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Please join Toward Zero Waste’s first Teens Talk where our panelists will share ideas for ways to talk to people about the environment and the impacts of climate change. Our panelists will be a variety of young adults from Triangle-area environmental clubs as well as environmental activists. \nThis event is targeted to middle and high school students who are interested in learning more about the importance of talking about environmental issues as well as the best strategies for having healthy\, productive conversations. \nPlease register via Zoom for this free event. \nCheck out our Teens Talk Resource page for links and videos on how to talk with family\, friends and others about environmental issues.  \nOrganizer & Moderator\nShriya Nanugonda\nHey! \nPanelists\nLogan Mossbarger\nI‘m a Zero Waste Wolfpack Intern with the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling at North Carolina State University. In this position\, I have worked on a number of initiatives throughout the campus to both educate students and change the waste management infrastructure on NC State’s campus. I perform waste audits\, work with our social media\, and perform a number of other tasks all centered around our waste management system. On top of that\, I am a senior studying a dual degree in Sustainable Material & Technology and Environmental Technology & Management. Kind of a long dual degree name but to put it simply I’m studying all aspects of sustainability and how that relates to environmental quality/protection. Connect with us @NCStateRecycles on Facebook\, Instagram\, Twitter\, & TikTok! \nSami Bommu\nHi! My name is Sami Bommu and I’m a Junior at Panther Creek High School. I enjoy exploring the environment and its effects on the human body. I was part of the volunteer program at UNC REX where I helped in the Childcare Development Center. I have been a part of Cary Teen Council for five years and I am currently the representative for the Environmental Advisory Board. For the past two years\, I have been researching the effects of nutritional deficiencies on pregnant women in developing countries. This has allowed me to understand the environmental burdens that affect low-income and high-income neighborhoods disproportionately. I hope to double major in Environmental Health and Computer Science in college. \nAida Guo\nAida Guo is a junior and the President of Environmental club at Green Level High School. Her interest in the environment and climate change began with reading a New York Times article describing how Shanghai (where her much of her family lives) would be underwater by 2050. Now she is passionate about fighting environmental racism and for climate justice. \nPrerana Prabhushankar\nPrerana Prabhushankar is a current Senior at Enloe High School in Raleigh. She has been with Alliance for Climate Education since her junior year\, and she has also been involved with NC Warn and Earth Uprising Chapel Hill. Two of her favorite memories are writing 400 post cards to unregistered voters to encourage them to vote for a climate friendly planet through the ENOUGH! Campaign and hosting a climate justice webinar with NC Warn. \nQuestions?\nUse the form below and our organizers will be in touch. \n  \nEmail *Question about the event?Question for a panelist? \n \n \n \n \n \n Thank you for your message. They have been sustainability enthusiasts for years and both have a strong passion to educate others on reduced consumption and proper recycling. They will also be joining us for the Ask The Experts Recycling Q & A. \nHere is the video outline: \n\nAn overview of the residential curbside recycling process in Mecklenburg county\nChallenges & costs of wishful recycling and how residents can help\nWhat is and is not recyclable\nInteractive/fun game to solidify learning and clarify common misinformation.\n\nAfter watching the video you’ll probably still have some recycling-related questions. That’s great! Please send all of those questions ahead of time to: rachel@towardzerowaste.org.
