He is encouraged to find these materials increasingly being repurposed into things like insulation and hopeful that greater awareness can reduce the excessive waste. Susan Kask\, PhD.Chief Sustainability & Strategy Officer\, Himalayan Wild FibersUnderstanding business and consumer choices involving the environment has been the focus of Susan Kask’s 35+ year career as a professor and consultant. Dr. Kask’s expertise in valuing non-market environmental goods evolved into a specialty in sustainability metrics development. She has published numerous articles and book chapters. These projects provide the foundation for her current work with business bringing sustainability values and metrics directly into business choices.\nOver the course of her career Dr. Kask has held positions as an Energy Economics Research Fellow in New Zealand\, Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Asheville\, Associate Professor in the Business School at Western Carolina University and Full Professor at Warren Wilson College. She is currently a consultant and the founder of Values2Action LLC and Chief Sustainability and Strategy officer at Himalayan Wild Fibers LLC\, a textile fiber company.Eric HenryPresident\, TS Designs Eric Henry’s journey into sustainability started January 1\, 1994\, the day NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) was enacted and he saw the business he started in the late 70’s completely destroyed. He realized then there is more to a business than a bottom line and changed to run TS Designs based on a triple bottom line of people – planet – profit. The vision of TS Designs is to make the highest quality printed apparel in a domestic transparent and trackable supply chain. TS Designs became the first certified B Corp in North Carolina. \nCurrent president of TS Designs\, Eric got his start when he launched Creative Screen Designs in 1978 while attending North Carolina State University. Two years later\, he and Tom Sineath merged companies to incorporate TS Designs.Karen Leonas\, PhD.Professor\, Fashion & Textile ManagementDr. Karen K. Leonas\, Professor of Textile Sciences\, in the Department of Textile and Apparel\, Technology and Management. She is a member of the graduate faculty in Textile Technology Management\, Fiber and Polymer Sciences\, and Textile Chemistry. Dr. Leonas teaches a variety of classes including an introductory class\, The Textile Industry\, and graduate courses in Sustainability and Textile Technology Management. She has received numerous award for outstanding teaching and advising. \nHer research has spanned several areas and she is well known for product development\, medical textiles\, and reducing/evaluating the environmental impacts of textile and apparel production and consumption. Her strengths in chemistry and polymer engineering\, combined with understanding the development\, production\, distribution and consumption allows for insights to address sustainability through the textile and apparel supply chain. Several years ago\, she chose to focus her research on this complex and critical area. Specifically she has investigated polymer degradation in various environments (marine\, freshwater\, agricultural\, body fluids)\, microfiber release and transmission\, new product development using recycled and bio materials materials (recycled PET\, Nylon\, PLA\, Cotton\, etc.)\, processing technologies to reduce environmental impact\, and water scarcity/footprint to name a few. She is a strong advocate for a circular economy (closed loop manufacturing) business model. Dr. Leonas has received numerous awards and recognitions for her research. \nDr. Leonas frequently partners with industry and is on the New York Academy of Sciences Change Fashion Advisory Board\, Walmart Technical Collaboration Board\, Walmart Sustainability Collaboration Board\, AATCC Sustainability Committee\, The Sustainability Consortium – Co-Chair\, Clothing\, Footwear and Textile Committee\, are several of her memberships. In addition\, she is active in the University and Community efforts promoting sustainable practices. \nDr. Leonas received her BS in Textile Chemistry from NC State\, her MS in Clothing and Textiles from University of Tennessee\, Knoxville\, and her PhD in Textile Chemistry/Textile Physics with and emphasis in Polymer Engineering as part of the PATRA (Polymer and Textile Research Association) from the University for Tennessee\, Knoxville. She worked for Burlington Industries\, Industrial Fabrics Division and has been on the Faculty at the University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urbana\, University of Georgia\, and Washington State University prior to being asked to join the Wilson College of Textiles faculty. My name is Shriya Nanugonda and I am a Junior at Raleigh Charter High School. I am an avid binge watcher and play sports such as soccer and track. I first started working with Toward Zero Waste as part of my gold award for Girl Scouts. I created a page where kids can learn about zero waste and the environmental problems we all face. After all my research and meetings\, I realized communication is an important part of environmental advocacy and decided to help create these seminars. \nPanelists\nNick Trombetta\n I am an activist and graduate of UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in environmental studies. My passion for politics and social justice was awoken by my experience with the Bernie Sanders campaign in 2020. For the first time I felt like I was a part of something special that was going to change the world for the better. While Bernie did not win\, I did not let go of that feeling. I have since become active with the Sunrise Movement\, Cary Green Citizens Coalition\, and the Progressive International. I have educated myself by reading many books from radical and left leaning authors such as Noam Chomsky\, Walter Rodney\, Naomi Klein\, Michael Parenti\, Howard Zinn\, and Angela Davis.  \nSydney Tai\nHi! I’m Sydney Tai and I’m a rising senior at Cary Academy. I’m passionate about driving individual environmental action by making sustainability less daunting and more fun\, a goal I worked towards when co-leading my school’s environmental club for the past two years. Next year\, I am excited to serve as Cary Academy’s inaugural Chief Environmental & Sustainability Officer\, a role which will unify all environmental initiatives on campus. In addition to hugging trees\, I also enjoy playing tennis competitively\, doing Speech and Debate\, and coaching at Cary Tennis Park. \nRocco Nociti\nHey\, my name is Rocco Nociti and I’m a rising Junior at Purdue University studying Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Architectural Engineering and a minor in Sustainable Engineering. I’ve always been fascinated by nature and the idea of a self-sustaining lifestyle and have done my best to advocate for renewable energy education and implement environmentally-safe practices. In high school I was the heavily involved in Student Council as the Student Body President and the STEM Energy & Sustainability Academy as an ambassador where I founded the Athens Drive Solar Panel Initiative as well as other smaller projects throughout my high school years. I first started working with Toward Zero Waste as part of my gold award for Girl Scouts. I created a page where kids can learn about zero waste and the environmental problems we all face. After all my research and meetings\, I realized communication is an important part of environmental advocacy and decided to help create these seminars. \nPanelists\nLogan Mossbarger\nI‘m a Zero Waste Wolfpack Intern with the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling at North Carolina State University. In this position\, I have worked on a number of initiatives throughout the campus to both educate students and change the waste management infrastructure on NC State’s campus. I perform waste audits\, work with our social media\, and perform a number of other tasks all centered around our waste management system. On top of that\, I am a senior studying a dual degree in Sustainable Material & Technology and Environmental Technology & Management. I hope to double major in Environmental Health and Computer Science in college. \nAida Guo\nAida Guo is a junior and the President of Environmental club at Green Level High School. Her interest in the environment and climate change began with reading a New York Times article describing how Shanghai (where her much of her family lives) would be underwater by 2050. Now she is passionate about fighting environmental racism and for climate justice. \nPrerana Prabhushankar\nPrerana Prabhushankar is a current Senior at Enloe High School in Raleigh. She has been with Alliance for Climate Education since her junior year\, and she has also been involved with NC Warn and Earth Uprising Chapel Hill. Two of her favorite memories are writing 400 post cards to unregistered voters to encourage them to vote for a climate friendly planet through the ENOUGH!
